CoAsIt CIAO Program in Aged Care Facilities across Brisbane for Italian residents

Behind the mask: A celebration of memory and joy

La Grande Festa Celebrating the Spirit of Carnevale – Italy’s most beloved tradition comes alive across Aged Care Residential Facilities in Brisbane with our CIAO Program!

Long before Halloween became the world’s favourite dress–up holiday, Italy had Carnevale, a festival so intrinsic to the country’s identity that entire cities would shut down for it. Dating back to the Middle Ages, Carnevale marks the last hurrah before Lent: a season of masks, mischief, music, and indulgence, when social rules were unheeded and everyone – from nobles to peasants – could hide behind a disguise and dance together in the streets.

This period is well remembered by Italian residents in aged care facilities. Many recalled joining friends and family to build elaborate Carnevale floats for their village, or dancing and partying into the night wearing flamboyant masks and costumes. Most enjoyably, and with impunity, playing pranks on unsuspecting passers–by.

Our activity officers made sure that the residents celebrated this important festival here.

Enthusiastically designing their own Carnevale masks, layering bold colours with joyful abandon, many residents reminisced about their youth and sharing this cultural celebration. However, they were doing more than just creating masks, they were engaging meaningfully in their cultural traditions and sharing the memories that had shaped their earlier lives.

TASTE OF THE FESTIVAL: CHIACCHIERE!

The atmosphere became very animated when authentic Italian refreshments were served. The beloved, traditional Carnevale treats called ‘chiacchiere’ appeared. These crumbly, crispy fried pastries dusted with icing sugar are a much anticipated sweet treat during Carnevale season and we couldn’t miss adding the irresistible delicacies for the residents.

As the celebration wrapped up, the benefits of Co.As.It.’s unique CIAO program shone brightly. By honouring their linguistic and cultural identity through meaningful activities, the program succeeds in bringing joy, comfort and connection to more than 150 Italian residents each and every month.

Viva il Carnevale!
