Nicholas’ journey with Co.As.It. is a heart–warming reminder of how our Queensland Community Support Scheme (QCSS) is providing practical support that changes lives for the better.
Nicholas had a devastating motorbike accident in April 2025. The ambulance screamed its way through suburban streets, rushing Nicholas to hospital in an effort to save his precious life.
Since then, his road to recovery has not been easy. In the past year, Nicholas has endured 13 surgeries, including skin and muscle grafts, and battled multiple infections – yet he is now well into the recovery phase.
To Nicholas’ delight returning to live at home instead of in a hospital ward was made possible with both mobility aids and the support of the QCSS program.
Our care workers have played a vital role in supporting Nicholas, 56, to continue to live independently and with dignity.
As he moves around his house, switching between a wheelchair and crutches, intensive physiotherapy is speeding Nicholas’ ability of walking confidently again.
He also receives weekly domestic assistance, practical support to get to medical appointments. Nicholas
is also looking forward to being supported by Co.As.It. to join a Bridge Club.
Services like these take over the tedious tasks of daily living, invigorating Nicholas’ life each time our care workers turn up on his doorstep. Thankfully, through their support, he has regained that sense of belonging to his community and engaging socially with others.
“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand and I most certainly have Co.As.It. to thank for enabling my living well – beyond all imagination – since my accident,” Nicholas said.
“All of the bodily aches and pains vanish when I am immersed in rivalry and laughter and I have my care workers to thank for going above and beyond the call of duty, they make sure I have the time, energy and ability to get involved in things.”
Through the QCSS program, Direct Care and Community Connection services, Nicholas receives the backing necessary to transform and redefine what is possible – and he is loving it!
