We all have the right to feel safe and be safe. That was the key message of a Queensland Police Officer who delivered an engaging presentation at our Personal Safety seminar on 24 June 2026.
The presentation from Senior Constable and Crime Prevention Coordinator, Diana Kratochvil, was packed with practical tips for situational awareness, online safety and proactive measures at home to help keep you safe.
If you missed the chance to join us, we are delighted to share some of the practical and effective strategies to stay safe, whether you are at home or out and about.
Personal and Public Safety
- Stay alert: Avoid using headphones or texting while walking, especially at night.
- Trust your instinct: If a situation or person makes you uncomfortable, leave immediately.
Online and Digital Safety
- Enable multi-factor authentication: Turn on multi-factor authentication to add an extra layer of protection in addition to your strong password.
- Update devices: Keep your mobile phone locked and turn on automatic updates for software and apps to fix security gaps.
Travel Safety
- Lock Up: Make it a habit to lock doors immediately, including at home, in a car or at holiday accommodation.
- Identify exits: Always know your exit points in restaurants, public transport and new locations.
Home Security
- Install sensor lights: Installing perimeter security lighting including sensor lights (also known as flood lights) that turn on when movement is spotted
- Home security audit: Regularly review your home security by conducting a home security audit, starting from reviewing the outside and work inwards using a layered approach

Remember, adopting these practical safety strategies amongst many more, can help reduce the risk of victimisation and assist you to respond effectively if your safety is threatened.
Feeling safe and confident in your everyday life is something everyone deserves.
While it is important you are aware of and exercise this right, be mindful that you also have responsibility for your own safety.
